Lottery FAQs

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about the SAFE Lottery.

Playing the lottery

What is the SAFE Lottery?

A weekly charity lottery run by SAFE (Scottish Charity No. SC050592). Money raised helps people leaving the Armed Forces into employment and supports veterans and their families.

How much does it cost?

£1 per entry, per weekly draw. Most players pay £4.33 a month by Direct Debit for one entry in every draw.

How many entries can I have?

Between 1 and 5 entries per draw. The cap of 5 helps keep spending at a safe level.

When is the draw?

Every Friday at 8pm UK time. Results are published on Our winners by noon on Saturday.

Do I choose my numbers?

No. Each entry is given a unique six-digit number which stays the same while you play. Three entries are drawn at random every week.

Can I buy an entry as a gift?

No. Each player must register in their own name, pay from their own account and pass our age check. You could make a donation in someone's name instead.

Payments

How can I pay?

By monthly Direct Debit or by an annual debit card payment. We email you a secure payment link after you sign up.

Can I use a credit card?

No. Gambling with credit cards is not allowed in the UK and we only accept Direct Debit and debit cards.

How do I cancel?

Email [email protected] or cancel your Direct Debit with your bank. Payments made for future draws are refunded.

Prizes and winners

What can I win?

1st prize £100, 2nd prize £25 and 3rd prize £10, every week.

How will I know if I have won?

We email winners on the Saturday after the draw. There is nothing to claim.

How are prizes paid?

By bank transfer within 14 days, once we have confirmed your age and identity.

Will my name be published?

Only if you agree. Otherwise we publish just the winning number.

What are the odds?

They depend on the number of entries. With 1,000 entries, each entry has a 1 in 333 chance of winning a prize. See Prizes and odds.

Age and responsible gambling

What is the minimum age?

18. The law allows society lotteries to be sold to people aged 16 and over, but SAFE has chosen 18.

How do you check my age?

We check the details you give us and may ask for a passport, driving licence or other proof of age and address. No prize is paid until your age is confirmed.

What happens if someone under 18 plays?

Their entries are void, all money paid is refunded and no prize is paid.

Can I take a break or self-exclude?

Yes. You can pause for 1, 3 or 6 months, or self-exclude for 6 months, 1, 2 or 5 years. Email [email protected]. See Responsible gambling.

Where can I get help with gambling?

Call the National Gambling Helpline free on 0808 8020 133 at any time, or use live chat at gamcare.org.uk. In Scotland you can also call the Citizens Advice Scotland Gambling Support Service on 0800 328 1131.

The charity and your data

Is the SAFE Lottery legal?

Yes. It is a small society lottery under the Gambling Act 2005, promoted by SAFE and registered with the City of Edinburgh Council as licensing authority.

How much goes to the charity?

At least 20% of the proceeds of every draw by law; our target is 50%. Figures are published in our annual accounts on the Scottish Charity Register.

What do you do with my data?

We use it to run the lottery, check your age and identity, take payments and pay prizes. We never sell it. See our Privacy policy.
